Streams is an arts-centered, youth-focused registered charity. Founded and based in Shelburne, Ontario, they serve the region of North Dufferin County. Over the past three years, through the provision of seasonal creative arts camps, they have served over 350 children. Streams Community Hub is on a mission to ignite learning, inspire youth, and enrich the community through the arts.
Many children and youth in Canada struggle with societal barriers and face adversities in their lives like detrimental living conditions, family violence, risk factors for mental health, school issues and identity challenges.
These circumstances have nothing to do with the value of who they are or who they can become, but because of these situations, children and youth risk not having the opportunity to live up to their full potential.
Even worse is the possibility of continuing cycles of poverty and crime or developing mental health issues.
This comes at a cost to the young person, and to society.
With the guidance and support of a mentor, these risks can be reduced or even avoided, and youth are reminded they can be anything they dream of being.
YouthTALK supports youth to create and deliver peer-led projects that address the myths and realities of suicide and mental health concerns, promote resiliency and healthy coping, and provide useful information about local resources in Wellington Dufferin.
These projects allow students to develop leadership skills and create meaningful connections with their peers to raise awareness and increase coping skills.
The YouthTALK Conference has been a yearly event for the past number of years. We bring together youth from across the region to learn skills and practical knowledge about maintaining mental wellness.
